The coalition of the Malagasy president Andry Rajoelina has obtained the absolute majority within the new parliament, according to the provisional results published Saturday by the electoral commission of the country (CENI), although the opposition screams.
Projections based on the number of votes obtained by the various parties during the May 28 election give the president a coalition of 84 seats in the 151 seats of the National Assembly chamber.
MPs supporting his defeated rival in the presidency, Marc Ravalomanana – who lost in the second round of the presidential election last December – won only 16 seats, according to provisional results.
The remaining 51 seats went to MPs supporting candidates who ran as independents.
The results published by the CENI have yet to be validated by the constitutional court. He will announce his decision in a few weeks after reviewing all legal objections.
Turnout was low at 31% for the May 28 parliamentary elections.
The day after the vote, the Ravalomanana opposition party TIM ("I Love Madagascar") announced that it was preparing a lawsuit after the elections.
"We have seen many anomalies in all provinces and we are preparing our appeals," said TIM Senator Olga Ramalason.
But an election observation mission from the Southern African Development Community praised the peaceful conditions maintained for the elections. The island has a long history of blows and disturbances.
The parliamentary elections were seen as the last round of a bitter feud between Rajoelina and his longtime rival, Ravalomanana, and his TIM party ("I Love Madagascar").
Both men have dominated the country's politics since the early 2000s, sometimes cooperating but fighting mainly for gaining advantage and high office.
According to data from the World Bank, the former French colony is well known for its vanilla and precious redwood. It is yet one of the poorest countries in the world, with 76% of people living in extreme poverty.
