Former US President Barack Obama and his family arrived in the south of France for a week-long vacation near Avignon, the medieval city that sheltered the pope in the fourteenth century.

Obama, his wife Michelle and their two daughters Sasha and Malia landed at Avignon Airport on Friday night and headed for Villeneuve-les-Avignon, on the other side of the Rhone, from the historic city.

No official information has been disclosed on the exact location of the family.

Daily Free Midi and other local media, Obama will stay on Bathelbade Island in an 18th century American family home. The rent for a week would be 55,000 euros.

Rumors had circulated since last week that the Obama could reside in the magnificent home of the former French Formula 1 driver, Jean Alesi, well above Villeneuve.

A security officer from the Gard Regional Police will surround the Obama residence. But the personal details of the former US chief's secret services will ensure the safety of the family during his visit to the region.

Avignon was the pontifical seat of the Catholic Church from 1309 to 1377. This story can be seen at the Palais des Papes, in the center of Avignon.
