Accra, June 16, GNA – The First Lady, Madam
Rebecca Akufo-Addo encouraged former students of Achimota Basic School to
contribute generously to the extension of the school facilities
welcome its increasing number.

"I believe that we all have the duty to present and
future generations of students, to provide them with a school and facilities that
which we can all be proud of, "said Ms. Akufo-Addo at the launch of the 60th anniversary of the school.

The opportunity was also used to launch the
Fundraising program "60 @ 60", launched by former students in order to
funds for the expansion of the school.

The first lady earlier joined the staff and

a health walk from the school premises through Abelempke, Dzorwulu, then
back to school.

She was accompanied by a government
including Mr. Boye Laryea, Okaikoi City General Manager
Municipal Assembly and Mr. Fusseini Issah, Member of Parliament for Okaikoi
North.

Ms. Akufo-Addo urged alumni not only to
proud of the School, but to show much more by ensuring that the future is
better for the current and the students.

The First Lady recalled that during her time,
the numbers were not very important and the facilities were sufficient for the students.

However, at present, the school records
showed that there were nearly 3000 pupils of KG One at JHS Three, but not yet
a lot has been done for the school over the years.

Mrs Edith Kyeremateng, Director of
School, said the school had been used as a grooming house for many people who had
moved to serve their nation with distinction.

She urged staff and students to continue
excellence in all their actions, reminding them that it was the fruits of
their works would be generous.

She also reminded the Akorettes of their duty to
give back to the institution that turned them into responsible adults.

The Achimota Basic School, formerly known as
Achimota Primary School, was established in 1926 by the British Colonel
control.

During the Second World War, the school was
closed and used as a point of convergence by the British government for the
West African troops recruited for the war.

However, in November 1959, the first president
of

Ghana, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, re-opened
School, allowing generations of students to be educated in the best conditions
institution.
