TThe number of serious injuries reported by nursing homes in England has almost doubled since 2011, The Sunday Telegraph can reveal.

Nearly 290,000 reports of serious injuries in non-NHS nursing homes have been reported to the Quality of Care Commission (CQC) since October 2010, the watchdog said.

Charities, former ministers and MPs described these figures as "deeply troubling" and "intolerable in a civilized society".

Serious injuries, including fatalities, increased rapidly year-on-year to reach a record of 43,594 in 2018, almost double the number recorded in 2011, when they were 23,709.
