Lorch knocks the hosts to secure a quarter-final spot

Egypt, host country, was shocked by South Africa on Saturday as Thembinkosi Lorch scored the winning goal in the last meeting.

South Africa qualifies for the quarter-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations after a 1-0 win over its host Egypt in Cairo.

Thembinkosi Lorch struck in the finals to stun Javier Aguirre's team and maintain his challenge to become continental champion for the second time.

Stuart Baxter's team was strongly criticized in the group stage when they lost despite losing to Cote d'Ivoire and Morocco, but reacted with a disciplined and clinical demonstration that allowed Mohamed Salah to remain silent and make the most of the late opening of Lorch.

They will face Nigeria in the round of 16 after the Super Eagles beat Cameroon 3-2 in a thriller.

The free-kick from Percy Tau was brilliantly reversed by Mohamed El-Shenawy while half started in a lively way.

The best chances of the first 45 minutes fell on Trezeguet, who could only shoot Ronwen Williams after being set up by Salah following a small break.

Trezeguet was again six yards from goal after a brilliant pbad from Salah early in the second half, but his arrival was again mediocre.

Egypt was beginning to take greater control of the debates, but the creation of chances was still a problem, and South Africa's captain Thulani Hlatshwayo was close to finding the bottom left corner with a header coming from Lorch.

While Egypt continued to be cautious, it was stung by five minutes of the end of regulation time. Lebo Mothiba made his way through space and ploped the ball for Lorch, who was calm to stay on foot in front of El-Shenawy and sent his side into the last eight.
