Kerry Katona's ex-husband, George Kay, has died.

The 39-year-old former rugby star reportedly died Friday after a drug overdose; he was found collapsed at home and taken to hospital where doctors were unable to resuscitate him.

Sources close to Kerry, 38, said the five-year-old mother was "heartbroken."

"Kerry learned this afternoon that George had suffered an overdose and was taken to the hospital, but was declared dead on his arrival," said a family friend.

"No one knows what he's overdosed, either intentionally or accidentally, Kerry's heartbroken, he's the DJ's father and she loved him once."

George had a long history of drug abuse and had struggled with mental health issues for many years.

Addressing the Mirror, the friend added, "She can not stand the thought of explaining to her daughter what happened."

Kerry and George met in 2012 and were married in September 2014, five months after giving birth to their daughter, Dylan-Jorge.

In October 2015, she confirmed their separation, claiming that he had badaulted her.

He was arrested by the police but the charges were subsequently dropped for lack of evidence. Kerry had received a restraining order against him and believed he had not seen his daughter for more than a year.

In 2017, they separated permanently, a source claiming that tensions were "breaking down" and that "everything started to happen when George told Kerry that he was fed up with playing the role of nanny for their children".

Kerry has two daughters from her previous marriage with Brian McFadden, Molly, 16, Lilly-Sue, Heidi, 14 and 10, of Westlife. She also has a nine-year-old Maxwell with her second husband, Mark Croft.
