Egypt were eliminated tonight from the African Cup of 16 by South Africa, which broke its hopes by scoring five minutes from the end at Cairo International Stadium.
The opponents of South Africa in the quarterfinals will be Nigeria, who won a 3-2 win over reigning champion Cameroon at Alexandria Stadium.
Thembinkosi Lorch's breakaway goal in the 85th minute put an end to the Egyptian title's ambitions.
The South African coach, Stuart Baxter, had already spoken of causing a "national disaster" to his hosts – and so, in a sporting sense, that proved.
Liverpool striker Mohamed Salah, who had been shaken by a cold, had a disappointing match and would have seemed "very moved" after the final whistle.
The second game did not provide the drama of the first.
Odion Ighalo has been a key player for Nigeria. He took the advantage in the 19th minute and then equalized shortly after the hour after goals from Stéphane Bahoken and Clinton Njie who had given their champions a 2-1 lead.
Three minutes after taking the score to 2-2, Ighalo placed Alex Iwobi (Arsenal) on the winning goal.
