NEW YORK (AP) – Martin Charnin, who made his Broadway debut as a Jet, in the original film "West Side Story", became a Broadway director and songwriter who won the Tony Award for eternal hit "Annie," is dead. He was 84 years old.
Charnin's daughter, Sasha Charnin Morrison, announced the death of her father on Sunday. She added that Charnin had died a few days after suffering a small heart attack on Wednesday.
He was a guardian of the flame "Annie", protector of what he had created with songwriter Charles Strouse and writer Thomas Meehan. The original 1977 won Tony's Award for Best Music and gave 2,300 performances, inspirational tours and unseen covers.
Charnin also played in Big Deal in the original production of "West Side Story" in 1957.
