The Agriculture Department of the Bawku Municipality has registered about 90,000 farmers who participated in this year's Planting Food and Jobs program in and around Bawku.
About 60 input traders were also registered under the program, under the supervision of the Directorate, which would provide farmers with government-subsidized agricultural inputs, including seedlings and fertilizers.
Mr. Charles Akowtigah, Bawku's Municipal Manager of Agriculture, said this over the weekend in an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) in Bawku.
He called on farmers to take advantage of the rains to sow in order to avoid the drought period because rain patterns are not uniform.
Mr Akowtigah said that in the case of this farming season, farmers were particularly interested in hybrid seedlings and open pollinated varieties (OPVs) and explained that the choice of many farmers for this was the result of the following: a public subsidy for these seeds, especially maize. .
Previously, hybrid seeds cost 20 GHC per kilogram, while OPV was 6 GHC per kilogram. He indicated, however, that with the arrival of the subsidy, the hybrid cost 3 GHC per kilogram, while OPV cost 2 GHC per kilogram.
Akwotigah said the government had planted the district with four types of chemicals, including Bypel, Adepa, Emar-Star and Gro safe, to combat any form of legionnaires that can attack crops during the season.
He added that the Directorate is organizing training for farmers and extension workers on good agricultural practices to improve their knowledge and skills in agriculture.
The director urged farmers to visit their farms regularly and to detect any worms on their farms and to inform extension agents.
