The Volkswagen ID.R set a new all-time record at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Romain Dumas completed the 1.86 km track in the south of England in just 39.90 seconds. In doing so, the 500 kW (680 hp) electric racing car broke the previous record of 20 seconds with 1.7 seconds.
Dumas also won the Sunday Shootout. The previous record of the famous Hill Climb was established in 1999 by Nick Heidfeld on a 574 KW (780 hp) McLaren-Mercedes MP4 / 13 combustion engine.
Setting the new all-time record at the "Goodwood Speed Festival", the ID.R once again showed that Volkswagen's electric powertrain can outperform even the most powerful conventional powertrains. Romain Dumas has exploited the full potential of ID.R on this short but challenging track. After the victory over Pikes Peak and the e-record on the Nürburgring-Nordschleife, he has taken a new step in the field of electromobility. Volkswagen Motorsport had systematically changed the ID.R for its release at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Among other things, the latest evolution of the electric racing car was lighter than when she set the records at Pikes Peak and the Nürburgring.
We used a smaller battery than at the Nürburgring and optimized the power output. Thus, the new sprint version of the ID.R weighs less than 1,000 kilograms, with the pilot on board.

The ID.R also completed its record without the drag reduction system (DRS) designed for the high-speed sections of the Nürburgring, as the runway characteristic at Goodwood made it superfluous.
Technology partner Bridgestone, who also participated in Goodwood's record race in 1999, also provided special tires for the 1.86 km sprint – a particularly versatile variant of the Bridgestone Potenza slick.
