The government will launch this year a new payment method using universal QR codes, announced the vice president.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on Saturday announced the government's next digitization agenda at the closing ceremony of the 2019 Diaspora Summit in Accra.

The 2019 Summit of the Ghanaian Diaspora Celebration is to recognize and celebrate the immense contributions to nation-building, to focus on current contributions and to advocate for political, economic, and political systems and policies. and others that would facilitate future contributions from the Ghanaian diaspora.

"This year there will also be a remarkable introduction in Ghana of a universal QR code for payments.

This will help us to go further in the cashless way because it will no longer be necessary for merchants to have a point-of-sale terminal with the QR Code platform. All they need is a cell phone and even a "yam phone" will work, "he said.

"With your mobile phones, you can make payments and the payment goes directly to the merchants bank account. If all goes well, the universal QR CODE platform from Ghana will be introduced by the fourth quarter of this year. ", said Dr. Bawumia.

The universal QR code is the world's first interoperable payment acceptance solution.

It offers customers a simple option for digital payment on business transactions, reducing the technological challenges badociated with running the company cashlite.

The universal QR code will allow merchants to receive digital payments without using point-of-sale devices. Countries that have recently introduced QR CODE universal platforms include Singapore, which introduced it in 2018, India and China.
