Police in the Ashanti region say that a middle-aged man arrested in Kumasi for allegedly reckless driving would have jumped from a moving vehicle.
The man, who has not yet been identified, was at the Tafo Pankrono police station on Sunday morning in the police vehicle after he jumped to try to escape.
He was pronounced dead on his arrival at the government hospital in Tafo, police said in a statement released Monday morning.
"The man jumped out of the vehicle trying to escape the police but fell to the ground and became unconscious. The patrol team transported him to the Tafo public hospital, but he was pronounced dead on his arrival, "the police said.
According to the police statement, the deceased was driving an unregistered Toyota Pasco sedan and "driving recklessly by turning the other vehicles in the opposite direction".
He reportedly ignored the signal of a stoppage of the police patrol team, which prompted the patrol team to pursue him.
The man was arrested and "a community police badistant was to escort him to Tafo Pankrono police station, closely followed by the patrol team," police said in a statement.
Upon reaching the crossroads of the Tafo government hospital, police said that the man had tried to escape and had left the vehicle leaving him unconscious. He was transported to the hospital.
Some young people in the area reportedly stormed the hospital just as the patrol team was leaving the health center.
They allegedly "physically badaulted some hospital staff," after which they took the body of the deceased to Komfo Anokye University Hospital.
Police reinforcements were called and five people were arrested to badist in the investigation of the alleged badault.
The police claimed that she had since recaptured the case of the man's death and badured the public that they "would follow the procedure provided for conducting a thorough investigation".
They therefore urged everyone to "stay calm", saying "that the result of the investigation will be made public".
The police are now using eyewitnesses, drivers and residents of Krofrom and surrounding areas, Tafo Pankrono and the Tafo government hospital district to report to the police.
The statement did not say, however, whether the agents involved in the case had been forced to withdraw to investigate. He also failed to say what happened to the car that was driving the man at the time of arrest.
Some people have also questioned the police report, particularly following the message "concocted" by the Ashanti regional police command to conceal the killing of seven people in Manso Nkwanta on July 17, 2018.
After the incident, the police presented various weapons claiming to be those found on the seven people who, according to police, were armed robbers and had hired part of their personnel in a shootout.
A fact-finding committee later concluded that there was no evidence that the dead were armed robbers who had exchanged fire with the police.
The families of the seven victims have since received 1.75 million Cedis as compensation.
