Founder of CoppaFeel! on the importance of protecting our skin from the sun – The Sun

I am currently in Italy. I know what you think: "Is she ever home?"

For now, the answer is "not really", although it is very hot, it is very hot and the sun burns everything, including some skinned bodies.

I no longer take my body and my delicate skin for granted.

I had a habit of thinking that getting burned was good because it led to a tan – which made me feel healthier and prettier.

To think that I would sacrifice my skin in this way AND that my chances of developing skin cancer was a little ridiculous.

I'm covered with moles, I can thank my grandfather for that, so being smart in the sun is even more important to me, but any skin needs to be neat.

I have met too many young people with melanoma not to take this seriously: a particular friend is currently living with Stage 4 skin cancer.

She thought nothing about tanning until she was told that a small piece of skin had become cancerous. If you did not know it yet, it can really happen to all of us, BUT you can reduce your risk.

Of course, the most obvious thing is to stay alert to the time you spend in the sun.

Avoiding sunbeds FOR LIFE is also wise. According to Cancer Research UK, the use of tanning beds can increase your risk of melanoma skin cancer by 16 to 20% and, let me add, make you look super wrinkled and aged before time.

I'm still puzzled that they still exist because fake tanning creams are pretty good these days. Other ways to reduce your risk should seem pretty obvious, but I will tell you anyway.

  • Stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day – usually between 11am and 2pm.
  • Cover yourself with clothes, hats and sunglbades to protect your eyes from sun damage.
  • Use a sunscreen with at least SPF 15 and apply it regularly.

I'm not going to lie, I'm a sun worshiper and it was only when I had cancer that I really started to appreciate my skin.

I even removed a shady mole during a treatment for bad cancer. Fortunately it was benign.

Just be aware that it is possible to get a good dose of vitamin D, even in Britain, without damaging your skin.
