The nine suspects in the Togolese West who had planned to declare a new independent nation out of Ghana were released.

This follows the removal of the court case by the Attorney General today.

Winnifred Sarpong, a senior general counsel, told the court this morning that they had been instructed to remove the nine-member case from the Homeland Study Group Foundation.

The nine were charged with treason, complicity in unlawful badembly and offensive behavior conducive to breaking the peace.

It is MM. Bisa Akorli, 54, Kofi Dzereke, 39, Thompson Tsigbe, 58, Benjamin Agbadzada, 48, Agbenyega Akudzi, 54, Freemen Blikaku, 36, Nkpe Tsryiri Kudzo, 61, and Sergeant Samuel Kwabla Kpogli.

The police and the military contingent rushed on them to Ho on Sunday, May 5.

According to reports, they were feverishly preparing to declare independent Western Togo on May 9, 1920.

The group would have created a constitution, an army unit and a hymn for the so – called declaration of independence.

Today's withdrawal was a shock, as the government's coercive state apparatus did not treat the issue lightly during its arrest days.

The Attorney General did not explain to the court why the Attorney General had withdrawn the charges against the nine accused.
