Deming makes detention of migrants differently

[ad_1]

Deming, New Mexico, is a small town located near the US-Mexico border, which is at the heart of heated debates about immigration.

Beginning in May, the US Border Patrol began filing asylum seekers, mainly from Central America, to facilities on the outskirts of Deming.

These migrants have traveled thousands of kilometers, often in dangerous conditions, and have finally reached official sponsors in the United States, unlike undocumented migrants crossing the border without these connections.

While the headlines of detention centers – where children may be separated from their families – are making headlines in the US, treatment centers like those at Deming offer a stark contrast.

In part, because they are mainly run by local government and community volunteer groups, rather than by Homeland Security or other federal agencies, as reported by Sam Schramski.
