Frank Lampard seems to have offered Danny Drinkwater a lifeline to Chelsea by starting the midfielder in his first match against Bohemians of the League of Ireland.

The 29-year-old was banned from Chelsea's first team under Lampard's predecessor, Maurizio Sarri, without having managed to make a single appearance in the Premier League or Europa League under Italian.

The only appearance of Drinkwater at the Blues last season came in Chelsea's 2-0 defeat of Manchester City in the Community Shield 11 months ago in the first game of Sarri.

The English international cost the Blues £ 40 million when he signed Leicester City in 2017, but he only played 23 games for the club in two seasons.

However, he had the opportunity to show what he knows how to do in Lampard's first game with this experimental line-up from former County Manager Derby.

As well as Drinkwater, Kenedy and Michy Batshuayi both join Chelsea after their respective borrowings with Newcastle United and Crystal Palace in the last quarter.

Tiemoue Bakayoko, who spent last season with AC Milan, starts on the bench with the interest of Manchester United, as does Kurt Zouma, the transfer target for Everton.

A number of Chelsea's first-team players have not yet made preparations for the pre-season due to various international commitments, but Lampard took the opportunity to watch his marginalized players in Ireland.

The Chelsea team against the Bohemians: Caballero, Sterling, Azpilicueta, Guehi, Kenedy, Drinkwater, Ampadu, Pedro, Gallagher, Palmer, Batshuayi

Subs: Cumming, Zappacosta, Chalobah, Zouma, Maatsen, Baker, Bakayoko, Brown, Gilmour, Piazon, Ugbo
