Manchester United has spoken to Newcastle about the possible Longstaff signing, according to Kaveh Solhekol of Sky Sports.
Solskjaer wants to attract this summer 21 years to Old Trafford.
He is linked to a move to United since the end of the season and it seems that the clubs have made contact for the first time.
But Newcastle has categorically refused to enter into serious discussions with the club, with Longstaff having a great future in the Northeast.
"There were high level talks last weekend between Manchester United and Newcastle United about Sean Longstaff," Solhekol tweeted.
"Newcastle will not confirm that there have been discussions, but we understand that Newcastle is absolutely not interested in selling Longstaff & and see it as an important part of their future plans."
United was to make his first bid for Longstaff this week as Solskjaer continues to reorganize his team.
It is believed that United will offer £ 30 million to the star, but they may think again after Newcastle told them it was not for sale.
It was also claimed that Newcastle would reject any offer for the player if it was less than 50 million pounds.
The Magpies have already sold one of their best players this summer; Leicester City bought Ayoze Perez for £ 30m.
Longstaff has also signed a new four-contract contract that will keep it at St James's Park until June 2022.
The new boss of Newcastle may even be tempted to offer him an improved contract to ensure he does not leave the club this summer.
Longstaff has been a target for Solskjaer since the end of the season, as it fits perfectly with his plan for United.
The club is looking to attract hungry young talent instead of buying star players.
They have already recruited Daniel James and Aaron Wan-Bissaka, 21, from Swansea and Crystal Palace, respectively.
James cost the Red Devils about £ 15m, while the Wan-Bissaka right back accounted for £ 50m.
