Clement Apaak, a member of Builsa-South Parliament, said the government should consider banning plastics as a way of managing waste in the country.
According to him, this ban will contribute to a large extent to solve the problem of waste in the country if it is supported by an effective plastic policy.
In a statement read to Parliament by Clement Apaak, it was revealed that plastic waste is a major concern in the waste stream, especially in low-income countries.
The mismanagement of waste in many middle and low-income countries means that they dominate the global source of pollution by ocean plastics.
Globally, about 80% of ocean plastics come from land-based sources and 20% from marine sources.
Plastic pollution has a significant negative impact on the health of our oceans and wildlife.
In addition, oceans and contaminated waterways have a negative impact on people's health.
The member for Builsa is concerned about the government's inability to make a bold decision on waste management.
He suggested that the government must adopt an effective policy and planning. According to him, this could include a ban on certain plastics or a total ban on all plastics. He however said that the ban on plastics alone could not solve the problem of plastic but that with an effective plastic policy, waste management can be controlled in the country.
He also called for an improved solid waste management system that includes investments in sustainable disposal infrastructure and improved waste collection systems.
He added that recycling campaigns and community campaigns must be taken into account in the fight for effective waste management.
"In the face of increasing waste and waste, we could consider improving our overall waste management system. This could include investments in sustainable disposal infrastructure and waste improvement.

He urged the government to launch a community campaign to raise awareness among citizens to involve them and change their behavior in plastic waste management.
