The startup of scooters Bird is betting on the French market significantly. The company plans to open its largest European office in Paris. Finally, Bird wants to hire 1,000 people by the middle of 2021, which is a significant figure for a company that has been around for a few years.
Paris is an important market for Bird and for all scooter startups in general. It is a relatively small city. In terms of area, Paris is smaller than San Francisco. But it is also a dense city. And of course, there are a ton of tourists coming to Paris just for a few days.
That's why 12 different companies have launched a scooter sharing service in Paris (yes, Twelve). But Les Echos recently reported that many of them had already left the city. Lime, Bird, Circ, Dott, Jump and B-Mobility are always there.
It's a capital intensive industry and Bird has already ambaded a ton of money to survive the competition. But money is only one thing.
Opening an office in Paris is also important to show city officials that Bird is really interested in this market. Last month, the City of Paris announced that it would limit the number of scooter companies in Paris. They will distribute two or three operating licenses. And Bird certainly wants to be part of it.
Bird will also use its Parisian hub to educate users about security. The company plans to distribute free helmets if you attend a safety training session.
