A woman was killed in a high-speed car accident in the south of France, while looted shops in the center of Paris in what the government has described as "unacceptable" unrest as a result of Algeria's quarter-final win over Cote d'Ivoire in the Africa Cup of Nations.
In the southern city of Montpellier, a supporter of Algerian football, celebrating the victory of his team, lost control of his car on Thursday and crushed a family, killed a woman and seriously injured her baby, said a security official .
The 21-year-old man, who was placed in police custody, was driving at high speed in the Mosson neighborhood, the official said.
The baby suffered traumatic injuries and was transported to the hospital, while the woman's 17-year-old daughter was injured in her ankle.
Algeria, the favorite of this year's football tournament, beat Ivory Coast on penalties in the Egyptian city of Suez to set up a semi-final confrontation with Nigeria.
Pillage of Paris
Algerian fans flocked Thursday to the Champs-Elysees in central Paris and the Vieux Port district in Marseille at the end of the match.
Two stores located near the Champs-Elysees were looted, said a journalist from the AFP news agency.
A total of 43 people were arrested and police used tear gas to disperse thousands of people gathered in Paris and Marseille.
"The damage and the incidents that took place last night on the sidelines of the celebrations (…) are unacceptable," Christophe Castaner, French Minister for the Interior, said in a tweet.
"I salute the actions of the security forces in Paris and throughout the country to maintain order and contain excesses."
Paris and Marseille are home to large minority communities of Algerian origin. The football celebrations, with supporters waving Algerian flags, have sometimes been a source of tension.
