"Pearson" Preview: Gina Torres talks about "Suits" Spinoff, Jessica and Jeff

Pearson can be born from Suit, but there will be no mistaking the two shows at the launch of the spin-off on Wednesday, July 17 (10 / 9c on USA Network).

The Chicago descent is not only more serious than the legal drama of the mother ship, but it also reveals that the struck-out lawyer, Jessica Pearson, is taking leave of the rich to help the poor in her new role as defender of the rights of the mayor. TVLine | Even after saying goodbye to Jessica on Suityou could see it quite often in the series, and now you have the fallout. Was it difficult for you to drop the character?
You know, I had absolutely no desire to see the character again when I left Suit.[[[[Laughs]I thought I had finished, then a little time pbaded and I started thinking about it, and what it could do, and that coincided with the 2016 election. Politics, that's all. was like watching TV. It was just crazy, all that was happening, and I started thinking about Jessica, what she could do in the political arena, because of her skills because of its qualities, and it is the seed that gave us this.

TVLine | You could potentially do this show for several years. What's always makes it so exciting for you to play after all this time?
She had always been a kind of mystery, quite frankly. Jessica Pearson is an enigma. It existed on Suit in a very very specific way. You knew very little about his past, you knew very little about his present. She was always trying to extinguish fires and manage these monster personalities within the company. And so that, I feel that it's brand new. We start to exploit this very rich character with whom we did not really have much time, in a real way. There is still a lot to learn about her, her family, how she really deals with her choices, what she wants to do and what it costs at the end of the day, in real time. So it's exciting for me. We see her as a person in her own right, not just as someone who exists to keep her alive.

TVLine | Sure Suitshe was a very fierce, very powerful character. Are we going to see one side of her, perhaps more vulnerable, in the spin-off?
Absolutely. For all those who love Jessica and how badbad she is, and how confident she is, what is wonderful about this show is that she is a fish out of the water. You are not always sure that she will win, and so you want to pick on you, you want Jessica that you know to come out victorious at the end of the day. But it's going to look different, and it's going to be hard, so it's going to lend itself, yes, to more vulnerable times.

TVLine | How would you say Suit and the fallout differs tonally and structurally?
It's a very different show. This show is really his own pet. I would say for Suit Fans, if you are the ones who liked smart and spiritual television, we have it. If you are a fan who likes rich characters and big intrigues, we have it. We always have great fashion. But that's where we draw the line. Tonally, we are darker. Tonically, we live in a much more realistic world, where there can still be a fulfillment of vows, elements of fantasy execution. You have the impression that she is in a more accessible world and is surrounded by people you may know very well, as opposed to people you really hope to meet in an elevator.[[[[Laughs]

TVLine | For the hard Suit fans, are there any familiar faces of Suit that they can expect to see?
There could be. Here and there.

TVLine | And what's going on in Jessica's relationship with Jeff Malone?
Well, she's moving to Chicago to be with her man, and that's double: she wants to regain her roots as a lawyer, she wants to use her powers for good and not evil, and she's really at a time in her life where she is looking for more, where she wants more depth and richness in her relationship. So, yes, she tries Jeff, and she also has a family she knows, on the paternal side of the family.

TVLine | There were hints that it is a very dangerous world and is talking about murder in the backdoor driver. To what extent is Jessica's situation precarious?
Very. When I said it was a darker show, it all came into play. We are really playing on the historical corruption in the city. It's something well documented that goes back hundreds of years. We use it as a backdrop. It's not just the corruptive nature of politics. We discuss everything that is happening right now. We are talking about immigration, gang violence, people who do not feel heard.
