Last month we had our first look at Steven Spielberg«Remake of West Side Story featuring Ansel Elgort and Rachel Zegler in the musical take on the starry clbadic novel of Romeo and Juliet. This photo has also included David Alvarez (Billy Elliott: The musical) and Josh Andrés Rivera (Hamilton) as brother and leader of Bernardo sharks and gang member Chino, respectively. But a key figure was missing from this photo and we saw it for the first time today.
West Side Story remake photo – Ariana DeBose As Anita
Ariana DeBose plays the role created by the actress Rita Moreno, which also appears in the remake as Valentina and executive producing the film. That means she's going to sing "America," one of the most famous songs of the musical. Here is the scene of the 1961 film adaptation:
The rest of the West Side Story the casting includes Ana Isabelle like Rosalia, Corey Stoll as a lieutenant Schrank, Brian d'Arcy James as officer Krupke and Curtiss Cook like Abe.
Tony Kushner, who worked with Spielberg on Munich and Lincoln) writes the script and the winner of the Tony Award Justin Peck choreographs the musical numbers in the film. They will adapt the original 1957 Broadway musical written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Leonard Bernstein, lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and direction and choreography by Jerome Robbins. This means that it might not have all the same components of the 1961 film adaptation, which actually changed some elements of the stage production.
Gustavo Dusamel will direct the recording of Leonard Bernstein's iconic score, while the composer and conductor David Newman will organize the score. Broadway's influence will be felt with the award-winning composer of the Tony Award Jeanine Tesori works with actors and Grammy-nominated music supervisor Matt Sullivan, producing the music for the film.
Given the interest in this project for Steven Spielberg, we are curious to see how he updates this iconic music for a modern audience. Certainly, it will always have a clbadical musical atmosphere but with modern sensibilities of cinema. And knowing how the source material deals with race, we hope it will have something meaningful to say in this tense social climate.
West Side Story is expected to arrive in theaters on December 18, 2020.
