Ken Ofori-Atta, Minister of Finance, Addressing Customs Officers
Twenty customs officers badigned to the port of Tema have been transferred.
It was after the discovery, by Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, during an "unannounced" visit to the Meridian Ports Services (MPS), the container processing company at the port of Tema, which the 20 officers had continued to malfunction.
During the visit on Thursday, the Minister of Finance accompanied by the Minister of Transport, Kwaku Ofori Asiamah, met with agents of the port.
Customs officers would have been transferred immediately for what sources qualify as "continuing" non-performance.
A recent report from the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) revealed that the port of Tema had struggled in the first quarter of this year to reach its revenue target.
According to GRA, this was due to the difficulties encountered in implementing new tax reforms and the "high rate of smuggling".
Revenue goals
However, the finance minister said he was optimistic about the target of 57.7 billion GH ¢ for fiscal year 2019 revenue, despite the difficulties encountered.
During the first quarter (January-April), the revenue agencies managed to mobilize about 10 billion GH ¢, 2 billion GHAC less than the goal of 12 billion GH ¢.
Ghana's ports have played a crucial role in generating revenue for the country.
However, any shortfall affects national revenue targets.
