A number of studies have shown that green tea extract can help with weight loss because EGCG, its main antioxidant, can help burn fat.
A study has shown that green tea extract can increase the activity of norepinephrine, a hormone that helps people burn fat.
Many human studies have also shown that green tea extract can increase fat burning and cause fat loss, especially in the belly area.
Green tea, like all types of tea, comes from the camellia sinensis plant.
What differentiates it from different types of tea, such as black, oolong and white, is the way it is processed.
Holland & Barrett explains: "Black tea is made from fermented leaves, so they are cut and then exposed to oxygen. While green tea leaves are steamed or roasted to prevent oxidation, they retain their green color and fresh flavor.
"This process also preserves the powerful antioxidants of tea, particularly a compound called epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG)."
