A few days after the Toronto Raptors defeated the Golden State Warriors at the 2019 NBA finals, the Los Angeles Lakers traded Anthony Davis against the New Orleans Pelicans.
Although Davis' trade was unofficial before July 7, it was the first and most important post-season move that would change the NBA landscape for the first time in five seasons.
After the Warriors had five star players for the NBA 2018-19 season, there is finally a parity with Davis and LeBron James over the Lakers, Kawhi Leonard and Paul George over the Los Angeles Clippers, and other talented duos now.
And as the 2019-2020 season approaches, Davis is now placing his Lakers against "no matter who" in a playoff series of seven games now.
"It will be fun, that's for sure. I am excited about it. I think the league has grown and it's better. All players are teaming up and spreading this talent throughout the league, it will be a fun season, "said Davis at the Lakers' press conference.
"I like our list. I like all the players we have from 1-14. I am excited about it. I will put our list against anyone. I feel like that in a series of seven games, we will come out victorious. "
While Davis and James are arguably the most talented duo in the league at the moment, general manager Rob Pelinka has been very successful in strengthening the alignment around them.
Although Kawhi Leonard's decision to finally sign with the Clippers has raised concerns, the reality is that the Lakers had to wait for one of the first three players and it may have worked for them.
Similar to the 2016 free agency, most teams had limited space and immediately signed dubious contracts with players. Although some targets were not identified, the Lakers had most players sign near or below market value.
With two of the top five players and their depth, one is optimistic: they can not only end their six-year drought in the playoffs, but also win everything in the 2020 final. While there's a lot of competition, one of the factors will be the speed with which they will build the chemistry.
With eight new players, head coach Frank Vogel is in a hurry to find the right alignment now.
