Steve Bruce is Newcastle's first choice to replace Rafa Benitez as manager – because Mike Ashley believes he can offer him a pittance to take over.
Bruce seems sure to be named to St James's Park sometime next week, tell the media On Saturday, he waits for the Magpies to reach a "sort of compromise" with the current Sheffield club on Wednesday.
The Daily Mirror said the 58-year-old "agreed to play this role" because of his "desperation" to regain control of his youth club.
But his "base salary" will be about one-sixth of Benitez's £ 6 million a year, while Bruce will pay £ 20,000 a week.
That would make him the least paid manager in the Premier League, but with an incentive contract that will reward him with "an additional payment for each place that Newcastle finishes above the last three".
A finish in the middle of the table would see Bruce win a 'Benitez style bonanza' if Newcastle, who is 'unwilling to pay' his £ 5 million clearing clause, can persuade Wednesday to reduce demand.
Bruce, who "still regrets" not getting his job after Sir Bobby Robson's departure in 2004, will give Graham Carr a return to the club as "supervisor".
