Bagbin, Quashigah, Humado, Fiifi and Heloo do not seek re-election

The second vice-speaker of the Ghanaian Parliament, Mr. Alban Bagbin, at the end of the process of appointing his party to the internal parliamentary primaries before the general elections of 2020, had neither chosen the forms nor sent anybody to do so in his name. well-speculated retirement from the chamber after the expiry of his current term.

Although he has not yet officially explained his action and announced his decision to leave the chamber of legislators, some experts have imputed the oldest stay of a member of Ghana to become the flag-bearer of the main party. opposition, the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

But Mr. Bagbin is not the only active member of the NDC to have failed to choose the forms.

Four others in the Volta region do not have it either. It is Mr. Richard Quashiegah, MP for Keta; Mr. Clement Kofi Humado, Member of Parliament for Anlo; Mr. Fiifi Fiavi Kwetey, Member of Parliament for Ketu South; and Ms. Bernice Adiku Heloo, Member of Parliament for Hohoe.

Mr. James Gunu, regional secretary of the Volta CND, who confirmed this information to the Ghana News Agency (GNA), said that a total of 15 women out of 74 people had selected application forms after the closing applications on Friday, July 12, 2019.

He stated that Charles Agbeve, MP for Agortime-Ziope, was unopposed as he was the only candidate to have chosen the application form to participate before the deadline.

Mr. Gunu stated that the Functional Executive Committee (FEC), in consultation with the Secretary General, had directed that the process of selecting the parliamentary primaries in the Hohoe constituency be allowed to continue with immediate effect.

The order followed a meeting Friday between the FEC and officials from the Hohoe constituency.

The regional secretary said the date has been extended to Tuesday, July 16, 2019 for eligible party members who wish to challenge the parliamentary primaries in the Hohoe constituency in order to choose the nomination forms.

Mr. Gunu stated that the initial schedule for holding the parliamentary primaries remained unchanged and that party leaders in the region were committed to creating a level playing field for all candidates in free, fair, credible and transparent primaries.
