About one-third of all customers who owe to the country's electricity distribution company are currently in the Ashanti region.

He could not easily tell the exact number of people and how much they owed to the PDS, but he said the Ashanti region was leading the energy debt ratio.
Ing. Asamoah also complains bitterly that the unpaid electricity rates have gradually had negative effects on the overall operation of the PDS.
According to him, the high level of unpaid debt usually prevents the PDS from buying new equipment in order to improve its operations.
S addressing Kumasi reporters during a media meeting on Friday, he urged PDS customers to pay their electricity bills on an ongoing basis.
He was of the opinion that the PDS could be properly positioned to better serve its customers if they were constantly paying for the energy that they had used.
He also noted that the PDS had put in place new policies to help put a definitive end to the syndrome of unpaid electricity rates in the area.
He announced that the PDS had begun a rigorous installation of prepaid meters in the area to end unpaid electricity rates.
It revealed that more than 255,000 prepaid counters had been installed in the Ashanti region by the PDS since the beginning of the exercise.
He also mentioned the theft of electricity, bush fires and unauthorized meters, among others, among the main challenges currently facing the PDS.
In addition, he said, faced with the challenges mentioned above, the PDS had started operations to strengthen its services in the region.
He revealed that transformers were being modernized, while PDS was working to automate most of its substations, among other positive interventions.
