NASHVILLE, Tennessee (WTVF) – A man is being treated at a hospital in Alabama after his wife said he caught a flesh-eating bacteria by kayaking on the Tennessee River.
Cbadey Rutherford is putting herself on social media to warn others after her husband, Ricky, has fallen very ill. He began to feel bad on July 8 with 103 degrees fever and leg cramps. On Tuesday, she said that he could barely walk.
They went to the hospital when his fever reached 105 degrees. It was then that she said the doctors had diagnosed her with necrotizing fasciitis, a flesh-eating bacterium, a life-threatening infection.
She says that Ricky has pbaded the "worst" of the infection, and they are praying for a full recovery.
Dr. Alanna Beane of the American Family Care said it was rare to get a bacterium like this, but it was definitely something to watch for.
"What we have discovered is that the bacteria enter the skin through an open wound, such as an open wound or burn, and enter the body in this way, resulting in serious infections," he said. Dr. Beane.
If you have been injured in the water, clean and disinfect the wound. Also be sure to monitor closely if the sore worsens after exposure. The first symptoms include swelling, redness and intense pain.
"Later, we see that the skin undergoes color changes, dark red, purple, increasing the pain in the space of 24 hours," explained Dr. Beane.
Flesh-eating bacteria can also penetrate the skin through insect bites. This is rare, but officials urge people to monitor all insect bites to see if their condition worsens significantly over time.
