Waititi's film did not deliver the serious epic awaited by those who knew Ragnarok's character in the comics well, but he revived interest in the character for both the audience and Hemsworth. Hemsworth's ability to exploit his humorous timing in his last three performances as Thor has allowed for greater emotional reach within the character. Undoubtedly Thor 4, who also sees Waititi on board as a writer, will continue to explore new facets of the character, while relying on Waititi's penchant for action comedy and surprising emotional rhythms. The return of Waititi in the franchise will probably mean that we will not experience the grandiose kind of fantasy and millennial exploration encompbading divinity explored in Jason Aaron's comic book series. But the filmmaker has never made two films that look completely alike and I can at least be sure that Thor 4 will be different from Thor: Ragnarok.
So, is there anything we can expect from Thor 4 so early? It is hard to imagine that Valkyrie (Tessa Thomspon) will not come back as New Asgard's leader. It seems possible that the return of Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) is also made possible, especially since the problems of distribution rights have prevented the character from conducting his own series in the near future. Korg (Taika Waititi) and Miek, two of RagnarokThe amazing characters also seem to be guarantees to complete the Thor Team, or the Revengers. As for the new characters, the favorite character of the fans, Beta Ray Bill, must make his debut. He was teased Ragnarok, with a statue of his head appearing on Sakaar. The first drafts of the scenario included the character, but this one had been abandoned after deciding that there was not enough room to do him justice. The hero of Korbinite seems straight out of the strange alley of Waititi. But the comic events that allowed Beta Ray Bill to join the Asgardians and prove his own worth should be restructured for the MCU. Walt Simonson's race on The powerfull Thor saw Beta Ray Bill lead the pursuit against Surtur, responsible for the death of most of his race. But with Surtur (Clancy Brown) who has already mentioned Ragnarok and his use as a line of hit rather than the ultimate evil, there is hardly any threat that could come from the villain. Like Malektih, Surtur did not have much room to develop in the MCU. But the hopes of a great evil are not entirely lost.
Supposing Thor 4 this Beta Ray Bill, we probably will not see the same story as the comics, Thor becoming unworthy and losing the possession of Mjolnir, since this bow was already covered. So, without Surtur or Mjolnir, what could bring Thor and Beta Ray Bill to unite? To answer this question, we have to go back to the original Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. Thor run, especially Thor No. 154 "To wake the Mangog". The Mangog is one of Kirby's worst villains, which still seems to be in keeping with Waititi's interests. Despite his appearance, Mangog has one of the most interesting backstories of Thor's opponents. The monster is the total hatred of a billion extraterrestrial lives whose race was wiped out by Odin. Mangog is awakened by Ulik the Troll, another character from Thor who appears frequently and we have not yet seen in the MCU, hoping to form a partnership. But Mangog has no interest in partnerships and his hatred pushes him to search for the Odinsword and pull it out of his scabbard, an act that will end the universe.
Thor # 154 to 157 could be just the story Thor 4 needs in order to pursue the themes established in Ragnarok, War of Infinity, and End of Game. Ragnarok has already revealed the imperialist tendencies of Odin (Anthony Hopkins), during wars alongside his daughter Hela (Cate Blanchett). And while Thor was approaching the story of his family, it was an aspect of Ragnarokhe felt exchanged for Sakaar's screenplay inspired by Planet Hulk. Mangog in Thor 4 could continue this exploration of the heritage, an adventure in which even the abandonment of the crown by Thor can not protect him. And maybe Beta Ray Bill could be the last surviving member of this extinct race that drives the Mangog, allowing the character to do his own exploration of inheritance parallel to Thor's. Thor and Beta Ray Bill could be seen as two contemporary heroes struggling to repair the wrongs of their ancestors, which could play on the theme of the reparations that imperialism implies.
Although not Thor The film has not yet fully balanced all its many elements in a way that perfectly captures the magic of reading the best comics of Thor. Waititi has allowed the franchise to make serious progress. Now that he is comfortable in this world and hopes to be able to use his screenplay style more and that Hemsworth feels more confident than ever for his future as Thor, we can only expect a film stronger. I hope the film will not mark the end of Thor's franchise, but a new beginning in which it will be possible to explore as many stories and tones for the character. So bring Beta Ray Bill. Bring the Mangog. And bring Thor for the fourth round. And that they are all worthy.
