FLORENCE, Ala. (WAAY) – A man from Alabama is being treated for a flesh-eating bacteria, which the family says was contracted in the Tennessee River.

Ricky Rutherford, 41, has been in the intensive care unit for a few days since he contracted the bacterial infection.

His wife, Cbadey Rutherford, said their family was kayaking on Saturday, July 6th. On Monday, Ricky was not feeling well.

"He came home with a temperature of 103. There was no sign of anything other than fever," she said.

On Tuesday, he could barely walk and a stain on his leg began to deteriorate.

Cbadey says Ricky did not get water with open wounds or cuts.

"I drew an outline around the area, so I would know if it was spreading and spreading drastically," she said.

Ricky was operated on to remove the infected area and the hospital confirmed that it was necrotizing fasciitis.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention claim that flesh-eating bacteria are rare and that people are affected by open wounds, insect bites and burns.

But sometimes you can get it without your skin being broken.

Doctors say that Ricky has managed the most dangerous part of all this and could be back home by the end of the week.
