Netflix has decided to remove a graphic scene of suicide from the season 1 finale of its 13 Reasons Why as the series prepares to launch its third season.

The creator of the series, Brian Yorkey, said in a statement on Twitter that the intention to describe suicide with so many graphic details was to "make sure no one would ever want to imitate him". But the producers heard the concerns of the mental health experts and decided, with the streaming service, to republish it.

Yorkey says the editing "will help the show to do as much good as possible for most people while mitigating the risks for particularly vulnerable young viewers."

Suicide prevention groups support the decision.

The series has garnered praise and criticism during its debut in 2017. The show included warnings about its graphic nature and Netflix has set up a crisis line of badistance lines.

New Zealand's chief censor has created a new clbadification, RP18, for the show after reviewing the content.
