A riot on the campus of Sandema Technical Secondary School cost the life and resulted in the fall of a student, according to reports.

A student, whose name was only mentioned in Starr News as Nashiru, was reportedly shot in the chest by one of the lost bullets firing barrels of a rushed police team to restore calm when unrest erupted around 23:30, Tuesday at 19:30. boarding.

Sources claim that he died as a result of his gunshot wounds in a district hospital in Sandema, where another student who collapsed during the unrest for reasons that remained to be established is under supervision of # 39; emergency.

An emergency meeting of the District Security Council (DISEC) is scheduled for this morning, according to Builsa North district general manager David Afoko.

"We are about to have a DISEC meeting. I just got back from school. I went to see the situation for myself. The students are gathered. In the current state of things, we want to make a decision and come back to it, "DCE told Starr News a few minutes ago.

Starr News learns that chaos erupted after some students resisted when members of the school's cadet corps ordered them to go to bed. In the turmoil, the conflicting students were gushing with stones, chasing each other with machetes and wreaking havoc on the school property by burning vehicles and buildings.

"The tension is still there. This DISEC meeting is going to be very short. We want to avoid any additional disaster, "said the WFD. "The director will come and explain. The police will also say their share. Then we will make a decision, "he added.

Peace Council condemns the riot

The National Peace Council, a peace-building organization known to have put in place peace clubs in some graduate schools up to now to combat campus troubles in the region, has condemned the last student riot in Sandema.

"Any form of violence is reprehensible. We know that no conflict can be resolved. In a school where there is leadership and advice from student representatives, it is impossible that a conflict can be discussed and resolved.

"The use of violence is always the wrong decision. Whatever the reason for the riot, there is always a possibility of a peaceful solution. We will wait for details to know what kind of advice we will give on the situation, "said Ali Anankpieng, Regional Secretary of the National Peace Council for the Upper East Region.

From 2014 to 2016, no less than 14 of its 20 public upper secondary schools were violently protested in the region. Affected institutions include Awe Technical High School, Bawku High School, Bolgatanga High School, Bolgatanga Technical Institute, Fumbisi High School, Gowrie High School and Kongo High School.

Others are Navrongo High School, Sandema High School, Sandema Technical High School, Sirigu Integrated High School, Zamse Technical High School, Zebilla Technical High School and Zuarungu High School.

In 2017, at least two violent protests erupted just two months apart in the region: Zuarungu High School in July and Bolgatanga High School in October. Also in May 2018, Navrongo High School was closed indefinitely as a result of a hunger strike by students for alleged unfair treatment by a dining master. New cases of student riots were recorded between mid-2018 and June of this year in Navrongo and Bolgatanga before the last upheaval occurred in Sandema.
