Dengue fever in Denmark is not up to rainfall

With 352 people tested positive for dengue, there has been a surge of viral vector-borne cases in Dakshina Kannada from 1 July.

"All preventive measures have been taken to destroy mosquito breeding grounds in Mangaluru and other parts of Dakshina Kannada district," said Deputy Commissioner Sasikanth Senthil.

S addressing reporters, he said that unlike in previous years, the number of cases has increased this year and experts attribute this situation to insufficient rainfall. Normally, the months of June and July are very rainy at DK, which eliminates puddles that become a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Sporadic rains have left the district with stagnant water around houses where mosquitoes breed. In June, 75 cases were reported. Last year, June reported 230 cases, but it was not a quick surge, added the deputy commissioner.

On the preventive measures, he said that the deduction at source is the need of the hour. Households must ensure that freshwater does not stagnate in their environment.

"Nearly 200 teams (with a health worker and two staff members) have been established in the town of Mangaluru to visit households, destroy mosquitoes and raise awareness. Mangaluru City Corporation will begin to address the water stagnation problem at KSRTC's bus stands and markets in Mangaluru. "

Door to door visit

The teams will begin the home visit starting Thursday. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes, carriers of the dengue virus, breed even in small containers, tires, plastic containers, coconut shells, broken buckets filled with fresh water. Cleaning the premises by removing these containers and emptying them at least twice a week would reduce the number of mosquitoes, he said.

Senthil said that a daily report from private hospitals on suspected cases had been sought to monitor the situation. Even educational institutions and homes should ensure that mosquito breeding is controlled on their premises. The MCC will also absorb the fog inside the houses and will appeal to the locals for them to cooperate.

Jeppu, Kodialbail, Bolara, Bunder, Gujjarakere and Arakerebail in Mangaluru town, Kadaba and Sullia taluks have witnessed outbreaks of dengue fever.

10 cases a day

According to private hospitals, at least 10 suspected cases are treated daily. Out of 352 cases, 200 patients are treated in different hospitals.

About 80% to 85% of cases are cured without complications. Only a few have complications that require platelet transfusion, he added.

The rubber plantations of the Kadaba and Sullia taluks are also fertile ground for mosquitoes, with water stored in containers used for rubber latex collection, DC said.

Special session today

A special meeting of educational authorities will be convened Thursday to discuss measures to be taken to combat mosquito breeding, he added.
