Government steps up alternative livelihood program to cover more districts

Accra, July 17, GNA – Government is on the scale
alternative livelihood program (ALP) to cover illegal miners in 14
districts of the four northern regions and three districts of the eastern region
Region.

A total of 1,400 beneficiaries are in
evaluated for selection in the intensification program.

Hajia Alima Mahama, Minister of Local Government
Government and Rural Development, at a press conference to announce the
graduation of program beneficiaries, said the government had invested 2 million
Ghana Cedis in the program, which consists of an evaluation of the
beneficiaries, registration, equipment and contract with Master
Artisans.

The goal of ALP is to provide decent services
working through creative projects in a safer environment for the socio-economic
well-being and also ensure that they have acquired employable skills and knowledge
needed to shape their lives and communities in a sustainable way.

She said that currently, 329 trainees on
500 courses at the institutional level were selected for graduation.

For the technical skills the beneficiaries
trained in electrical installations, auto mechanic, plumbing, graphic design,

Carpentry.

Hajia Mahama said that these beneficiaries, who
pbaded through a year-long training were provided with starter tools and
equipment worth 700.00 GH per trainee.

The minister said another phase of the
program was community-based training with a focus on income-generating skills
training and was to last from three months to three years.
