Tracking content from Facebook, Twitter, Google and Co. has blocked Firefox's tracking protection from the start by default. In future versions of the open source browser, social media items in Enhanced Tracking Protection will now be listed separately. The Bleeping Computer web portal has encountered a Mozilla bug report and various mock-ups illustrating the changes.

Even with the newly developed social media blocker, cookies and other social media tracking items are stuck as usual. However, the required content will continue to be used to secure the functionality of the web pages. The standard blacklist contains various addresses from Facebook, Occulus, Instagram, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Twitter, TweetDeck, LinkedIn and YouTube.

To draw attention to this new feature, Mozilla apparently wants to initiate a notification about the information on the page in the address bar as soon as a number of social media followers have been blocked. The notification will be redirected to the corresponding tracking protection options in the settings. In the same way, the developers also want to specify other types of tracking, such as cryptominer, fingerprint or inter-site cookies, also blocked by Firefox. The new social media blocker should be deployed with Firefox 70 on October 22nd.
