Adam Savage of Mybbusters spent 14 years and over $ 15,000 on a costume

How much would you spend on building an almost perfect replica of your favorite movie costume? To design and create a copy of his favorite space suit, Adam Savage, host of Discovery Channel's "Savage Builds" and former co-host of "Mythbusters," spent more than $ 15,000.

Savage recommends people follow their "secret thrills". And his not-so-secret thrill is cosplay. For years, Savage has been attending Comic-Cons all over the country in elaborate costumes that he has designed and manufactured from scratch.

But one of these experiences is not only his "favorite costume on the planet", but also the most expensive that he has created.

"My most expensive costume – it will be Kane's" Alien "costume," says Savage at CNBC Make It. Savage says that he spent about 14 years gathering the information, components, knowledge and research needed to create his own version, investing more than $ 15,000 in prosecution over time.

"Alien", a 1979 film directed by Ridley Scott, follows a team that encounters an aggressive alien race. In the film, the director Kane, portrayed by actor John Hurt, meets the first alien, who attaches to his face and, later, bursts dramatically from the chest into a pivotal scene.

After years of work on the project since about 2005, Savage has set a deadline to complete it. "Before planning for 2014, I knew I wanted to complete Kane's Alien Space Suit and bring it to the ground at Comic-Con San Diego later this summer," Savage writes in his new book, "Every Tool & # 39; his Hammer: Life is what you make of it. "

Before even trying to start making the costume, Savage says he has spent a lot of time researching all the details of the costume. He spent hours filming footage and trying to understand what each part was made of. "I've created my own versions many times, when I realized that some of my details were not correct," he says.

The acquisition of materials has also proved delicate. He sent samples of textiles from Italy and China for different types of fabrics.

Many pieces of the costume, such as epaulets and helmet, had to be made from scratch. "I hired people to make molds for me, I hired people to do some casting for me," he says, working with his contacts in the industry. The PropStore debuted with Kane's original costume used in the movie at San Diego's Comic-Con in 2012, which also allowed Savage to pinpoint details.

"I aspire to have one for years and now I finally have it," said Savage during a video interview with Tested. The team then followed Savage around him as he wore the suit as he walked the floor of Comic-Con for just 20 minutes. "It was a new level of heat," Savage said after the walk. "I do not think I'll go for such a hot suit."

Its pro advice if you design and create a costume on a budget: go slowly and steadily. "I spread it out over 15 years, so my wallet was not affected as much as it would have done at one go," Savage says.
