The government will implement an action plan for the safety of journalists

Accra, July 18, GNA – Government Works
implement a plan of action on the safety of journalists against impunity in
in accordance with its advocacy mandate and to ensure a comprehensive approach in the media
development.

This is to ensure a favorable environment
for the practice of safe and responsible journalism in Ghana.

Given this, the Ministry of Information
collaborates with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization
Organization (UNESCO) to organize stakeholder engagement on the
National Coordination Mechanism for Safe and Responsible Journalism in Ghana
Accra on July 19th.

The actors are from the
Executive, Legislature, Judiciary, Police Service, Armed Forces, National Peace
Council, National House of Chiefs and National Commission for Civic Education
as well as media actors such as the Ghana Journalists Association, Ghana
Association of Independent Broadcasters, Association of Private Newspapers of Ghana,
Ghana Sports Writers Association and Civil Society Organizations
on the media and human rights.

A statement published and signed by Mr. Pius
Enam Hadzide, a deputy minister of information Thursday, said the government had
seriously aware of reported incidents of badault and beatings
journalists in the country and work to ensure their safety.

"The government recognizes that the media is
contributing to / and beneficiary of a knowledge society, good governance,
inclusion, empowerment and peacebuilding: all the desirable outcomes of
United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and contributed significantly to
progress made in strengthening the institution of a democratic society, including
media, "the statement added.

He declared the creation of a liberalized media
the repeal of defamation laws and the adoption of the right to liberty
The law on information, all contributed to guaranteeing access to freedom and
justice for all.
