A Nigerian imam, who saved 262 Christians from the murderous shepherd by hiding them in his mosque and at his home, was honored by the US government.

Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, 83, was awarded the International Religious Freedom Award along with four others from Cyprus, Sudan, Brazil, and Iraq.

Imam had rescued Christians from the Barkin Ladi area in Plateau State, central Nigeria, who were fleeing the killers.

More than 80 other people were killed during the attack targeting Christians in the area. This number could have been larger without the intervention of the Imam.

Imam had revealed in an interview that he wanted to help, because more than 40 years ago, Christians in the area had allowed Muslims to build the mosque.

At the event attended by US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo, Imam Abdullahi reportedly "He put his life in danger to save members of another religious community, who would probably have been killed without his intervention."

The imam had already received a "handshake and national honor" from Nigerian President Muhamadu Buhari.
