Nigerians deported to the border (archive photo)
The Nigerian Federal Government has stated that 994 Nigerians have been expelled from Ghana by the land border in the last 18 months.
Ms. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chair of the Nigerian Diaspora Commission, explained that 508 Nigerians had been expelled in the last six months, while 486 had been repatriated in 2018.
She disclosed this information in Abuja on Thursday, while she was meeting a Nigerian professor, Augustine Nwagbara, who had been sacked by the Winneba Education College, Ghana, for inciting hatred.
Dabiri-Erewa warned that the continent would suffer if Nigeria treated other nationals in the same way.
She said: "Nigeria will not decide to do what they do to Nigerians there. We demand respect. If a Nigerian commits a crime, you should take care of that person rather than generalize the problems by punishing those who are innocent of the crime. "
She said that with the signing of the African Continental Free Trade Agreement, it was necessary for African countries to be united and to work for the promotion of bilateral relations.
Nwagbara said he had not yet received a letter of dismissal from the Ghanaian government.
Noting that the so-called incentive video was falsified, he said the scenario as a whole was intended to promote xenophobic attacks against Nigerians.
He praised the intervention of Nigeria's High Commission in Ghana, alleging that without his timely intervention, he could have been killed.
