Opened in 1950, Seattle's Northgate Mall was America's first mall to call a shopping center.
But now, after years of struggling to reinvent the mall, the developers have decided to turn the property and surrounding land into a mixed-use commercial and residential complex and an NHL training center. The project is expected to be completed in 2021.
Nordstrom is the latest of many large retailers, including JCPenney and Macy's, who have decided to close their Northgate sites. Merchandise and employees at Northgate will be redistributed to other Nordstrom stores in the area. The Nordstrom Rack will remain open.

However, it's not just the department stores like Nordstrom and Macy's that are eager to abandon the Northgate Mall before it closes. Smaller retailers and long-standing restaurants are also jumping boats, with some local reports claiming that they were chased out by the promoters.
Even phone charging stations and a Pokemon Go gaming center have not been able to save America's first mall from the apocalypse of the retail business.
