OMAHA, Neb. (AP) – Health officials have warned residents of Douglas County, eastern Nebraska, to take precautions following the discovery of West Nile virus in mosquitoes in the county.
The Douglas County Department of Health announced in a press release that four local mosquito outbreaks at two sites had been tested positive for mosquito-borne disease.
The pools are located in Seymour L. Smith Parks in Ralston and Zorinsky Lake in western Omaha.
The department says that large mosquito populations have been reported since May. Residents are urged to apply a mosquito repellent and to wear a shirt, pants, socks and long-sleeved shoes, especially at dawn and dusk, when mosquitoes are the more active. Residents should also remove stagnant water to prevent mosquito breeding.
Those who contract West Nile virus may have symptoms ranging from mild influenza-like symptoms to death.
