There were jubilation scenes at Royal Portrush tonight when Shane Lowry won his first major – dominating the rest of the pack to become the Open 2019 champion.

The 32-year-old won the Claret Jug after a last intense day that allowed him to meet the challenges of Tommy Fleetwood and not be outdone during a day during which most competitions have much suffered.

The fan favorite was encouraged as he finally began celebrating the victory on the 18th green before ending his day with an equal footing to officially win the 15-point win for the tournament.

The offensive was swept away by an electrifying Irish crowd at Dunluce Links as he lost four birdies on the way to victory, with closest challenger Fleetwood fighting in the final stages.

This triumph marks a turning point in the career of the 32-year-old, who eventually got his hands on one of the four major leagues in golf, thus improving his second-place tie at the US Open 2016.

Only five other Irish players were crowned winners of the Open after Fred Daly, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke and Rory McIlroy.
