Mom went off to fight for life after scratching the cat that leaves her with a flesh-eating insect, MRSA

A mother almost died after developing a deadly insect eating flesh after being scratched by a stray cat.

Moira Brady, 45, developed MRSA and Streptococcus A, which can cause serious bacterial infections, after being scratched by a cat in her garden.

Moira says that Calvary has "ruined" her life after losing a finger with her left hand.

The doctors told her that she was lucky to be alive – it is likely that the infection would have killed if she had not seen a doctor.

Her kidneys began to close as the infection spread through her body.

Moira, from the Baillieston area of ​​Glasgow, spent a month in the royal infirmary of the city. She had two skin grafts on her arm and will require further surgery.

She recounted that she had been scratched by a cat – perhaps a wild cat – who was fighting with another cat on a trampoline in her backyard.

The animal badped after she tried to chase them away.

At the time, she did not think about the scratch, but it had punctured her skin. A few days later, his hand was swollen and one of his fingers had turned blue.

Moira, who has two daughters, said, "They asked me if I had been close to animals.

"The doctors had to remove half of my finger and then the rest.

"The infection has gone through my body.

"They said that I could have died or lost all my hand.

"The surgeon stayed five-and-a-half hours after his shift to save my life and had to have a blood transfusion.

"He told me that I was very lucky.

"The number of people I talked to who could not believe it had happened after having a cat scratch.

"It ruined my life, I can not do daily things like taking food in the oven."

Dr. Emilia Crighton, Public Health Consultant and Head of the Health Services Section of the NHSGGC, said: "If it is only a scratch, clean the area and consult a doctor if she is infected.

"If it's a real bite and the skin is broken, I would advise people to see a doctor because the area could be infected."
