Zongo Against Drugs (ZAD), a civic pressure group, was formed in Sabon Zongo, in the central Ablekuma municipality, to combat the misuse of drugs by young people in the region.
It also aims to advocate for youth awareness of the dangers of drugs and its side effects and to help them abstain.
Abdul Rahim Salifu Ango, chairman of the group and clinical psychologist at Korle Bu University Hospital, told the Ghana news agency that the group would sensitize young Muslims in Accra on the need to avoid negative societal practices and moral principles.
The ZAD, he said, is a non-partisan group whose members are beyond the political divide, adding that it includes community opinion leaders and some leaders.
He said the initiative sought to encourage decision makers and the public to take steps to recognize and take pragmatic measures to discourage young people from the need to avoid deviant and immoral acts.
Mr. Salifu Ango said that the tools of information and communication technologies (ICTs) offered more opportunities to young Muslims and that it was necessary to prepare to play a meaningful role in the country.
He added that ZAD had the intention of working in partnership with private and public sector institutions as well as with international non-governmental organizations committed to the same objectives.
He expressed the hope that the media would continue to play their critical role in informing and educating the public about the ZAD's concerns.
He said that community commitments and press releases would be the main way to pursue the goals of ZAD.
