Volodymyr Zelensky has always been in the habit of defying odds, with Ukrainian electoral authorities now planning an absolute majority for his Servant of the People party in Sunday's general election.
With 46.22% of the votes counted, the presidential party is en route to a total of 247 seats, far exceeding the 226 needed for coalition formation.
Exit polls suggested that the former presenter had done a good job and would at least be able to form a coalition with like-minded partners. Smart money was on a showbiz political pact with a new party led by musician Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, who made the parliament.

But once the counting began, it became clear that Mr. Zelensky's party had benefited from the proportional and first-past-the-post system of Ukraine, surpbading all other parties in those constituencies.
The result, which consists of concentrating all executive and legislative power in the hands of the comedian who became president, is a first for modern Ukraine. This means that Zelensky now has full control of his coalition and cabinet and will be able to choose a prime minister of his choice.
