The Public Security Bureau has expressed concern over the increase in violent crime, including murder, in the country.
In its 2019 semi-annual report, the bureau said that "crime and violent crime continue to cause concern, with these two events accounting for over 60% of public security events reported between April and June 2019."
He noted that violent crime increased by over 43% in the second quarter and caused more than 25% of deaths in the first half of the year.
Figures are based only on reported cases.
Murder, manslaughter, armed robbery and badault are among the crimes that led to this increase.
In the first quarter of the year, violent crime dominated the list of major crimes committed in the country.
The Public Security Bureau has expressed concern that the Ghana Police Service "does not have any known active program regarding untreated cases and absolutely no information on the rate of elimination of the crime, particularly murder, armed robbery and badault ".
He suggested that the police set up irregular checkpoints rather than regular checkpoints that only check vehicle documents.
"The GPS must stop mounting regular checkpoints to basically check the vehicle documentation and, occasionally, weapons for irregular checkpoints, and include sobriety checks," the report says.
The Greater Accra region has always been at the top of public security concerns, including violent crime, with about 199 incidents recorded in 2018 and the previous year, 2017.
Transportation remains the leading cause of death in Ghana
BPS has also identified transportation-related incidents as one of the leading causes of casualties in the country.
According to the BPS, 41% of deaths recorded in the country, among ten indicators, from January to June 2019, were caused by transport.
"Transportation remains the leading cause of death among the ten indicators of public safety and monitored crime. It accounts for more than 41% of deaths reported from January to June 2019, "BPS said in its report.
The report broadly categorized public safety events clbadified as crimes, violent crimes, fires and incidents related to the private / labor sector, transportation incidents, civil unrest, loss of police lives, police brutality, police arrests, disasters natural and general incidents.
BPS said in its report that 65% of all vehicles involved in all road accidents were commercial vehicles (with the exception of motorcycles).
The BPS acknowledged recent efforts by Citi TV / FM in collaboration with the Ghana Police Service's Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) to reduce the lack of discipline on the roads, but urged MTTD traffic laws across Ghana to make significant gains in reducing road accidents. "

The Ghana Public Safety and Crime Report, also known as BPS WATCH, is an initiative of the Public Security Bureau to provide information to the general public, policymakers and law enforcement.
"For the first half of 2019, the three most frequently reported incidents of public safety were crime, violent crime and civil unrest, accounting for 32%, 32% and 9% of all reported cases, respectively" The report.
