The Ghanaian navy is in pursuit of pirates who hijacked a ship from the Tema anchorage and headed for Togolese waters, but abandoned the operation halfway.
The Commanding Officer Commodore of the East Navy Command, James Kontoh, said this shortly after a Ghanaian navy operation rescued five people, one of whom was a Ghanaian, from the abandoned ship .
Some of the hijacked people were beaten by their captors before being dropped aboard the ship.
Commodore Kontoh said the collaboration between the Nigerian Navy and his Ghanaian counterparts was ongoing. He added that this measure would go a long way in countering pirate activity.
The daredevil hacking mission began with a fishing vessel missing from the Tema anchorage, after being taken away by suspected Nigerian pirates who had later abandoned it on the high seas at Keta.
The hijackers had planned to direct the tuna boat to the Bayelsa state in Nigeria, but gave up the idea because of a fuel shortage.
A traumatized crew member found aboard the abandoned vessel was taken to a health facility for examination.
The tuna vessel with the official number 316694 and the AFT28 registration had docked at berth 10 at the port of Tema and had been discovered on board by the navy, among other items.
The rescue mission was preceded by a series of navy information on ships attacked by pirates – a situation that DAILY GUIDE brought together prompted the Ghana Navy to raise its level of alert.
"In the last 48 hours we have had a series of attacks that we have tried to solve. Everything happened Monday at dawn, around 3:30, when a motorboat arrived in the Tema mooring area. He forcibly seized a ship and began heading to Togolese waters until the vessel complained that she did not have enough fuel to continue her journey, "said Commodore Kontoh.
In a series of events, the hijackers dropped the first ship and descended on a tanker. The hijackers transferred three people from the first ship to the second. There was a shortage of fuel and their order to go to Bayelsa in Nigeria was therefore abandoned. They then turned to a fishing vessel and took two crew members, including the first three, aboard the fishing vessel, and then headed for the waters of Benin, close to Nigerian waters.
When night fell, the hijackers took their abductees in their fast boats and headed for an unknown location, told the naval officer.
It was after the departure of the pirates of the air that the fishing vessel sent a message about their situation when the Navy sent a team to rescue the crew in distress.
