Chelsea midfielder Ethan Ampadu has joined RB Leipzig for a one-year loan deal.
The 18-year-old Welsh international leaves for the Bundesliga in hopes of winning the first team matches. Ampadu was limited to two England Cup matches and three Europa League outings last season.
The recent history of Leipzig has trained a number of young British talents. Oliver Burke spent the season there in 2016-17 after the Bundesliga club awarded him the title of the most expensive player in Scotland to date, at 15 million euros.
Ademola Lookman spent six months on loan there with Everton and would be on the verge of making a permanent comeback this summer. And Arsenal midfielder, Emile Smith-Rowe, was loaned in the second half of last season, but was limited to 3 Bundesliga matches.
The sports director of Leipzig, Markus Krosche, has welcomed the acquisition of Ampadu for his youth and versatility. "Despite many offers in English, Ethan has decided to join us, and we have another talent in our ranks that is versatile enough to give our team even more variation."
Although he put it back for the season, Chelsea coach Frank Lampard said Ampadu was part of his long-term plans. Last year, in the interest of Ethan and Chelsea, the idea that he could play a lot of games somewhere could be of benefit to him.
