Shipments from Korea decreased in the first 20 days of this month.
If the downward trend continues through the remainder of July, the country would experience negative export growth for eight consecutive months.
Seo Eunkyung breaks down the numbers for us.
Exports in July decreased in the first 20 days of the month.
According to the Korean Customs Service, exports fell by $ 28.6 billion, a decrease of 13 percentage points from the same period of the previous year.
Exports to China fell sharply, registering a drop of 19 points-3% in July, followed by the European Union with 12 points-3% and Japan with 6 points-6%.
Poor semiconductor exports would be the main factor behind the sharp decline in total exports.
Semiconductor exports fell to minus 9 points-3% last December, and the numbers remained negative until June of this year.
From July 1 to July 20, semiconductor exports fell another 30 points-2%, resulting in a decline in the total value of exports.
Exports of petroleum products fell by 15 percentage points to six per cent.
"On the macroeconomic front, the prolonged trade dispute between the United States and China and the weak global trade around the world have had a negative impact on Korea's exports, leading to a fall in numbers."
The director added that the stagnation of exports is due to a number of unstable external factors, including the decline in world trade volumes and the decline in semiconductor prices.
